Anna Schwartz

American economist (1915–2012). Co-author with Milton Friedman of *A Monetary History of the United States* (1963), the empirical foundation of monetarism.

Stub.

Anna Schwartz’s career at the National Bureau of Economic Research, beginning in 1941, produced the most thorough quantitative reconstruction of US monetary history in the twentieth century. The 1963 Monetary History (with Friedman) is the empirical core of monetarism; subsequent volumes (Monetary Statistics of the United States 1970; Monetary Trends 1982) extended the reconstruction. Less visible in popular reception of “monetarism” than Friedman, but equally a co-architect of the program.
